Ball pits for kids in round, square and shaped designs

A ball pit for babies gets set up and stays out. Once a child discovers it, they want back in, and the best ones hold up through months of daily use without losing their shape or their look. Here you will find baby ball pits and toddler ball pits from MeowBaby and Monio for Kids: designs with fabric covers in boucle, cotton, velvet, corduroy and plush, across round, square and shaped formats, in many colourways. On most models, balls are chosen separately at checkout, so you can pick the colours and quantity.

What to Know Before Buying a Baby Ball Pit

Foam Core, Cover Materials, and Washability

Most of the ball pits in this collection have polyurethane foam walls: MeowBaby lists it across its round and square pits, and Monio lists it on its boucle pits. That foam is structured enough to hold its shape under daily use and padded enough to cushion the inevitable falls; check each listing for the details of that pit. On the round and square pits, the outer cover zips off for machine washing; the shaped Flower pits are wiped clean with a damp cloth instead. Cover fabric choice is where the range diverges: Boucle offers a looped premium texture; Cotton gives a clean, matte finish across a wide colour palette; Velvet is softer to the touch with a slight sheen; Corduroy has a ridged texture with a more tactile feel. MeowBaby's ball pits are CE certified.

Round vs Square, and Choosing Wall Height

Round ball pits at 90cm diameter suit most room layouts and are the most common format. The square format, available in Cotton and Boucle, suits rooms where a round pit does not fit neatly, such as beside a sofa, in a corner, or in a smaller nursery. Wall height choices (30cm and 40cm) suit different developmental stages: 30cm for younger babies sitting independently, 40cm for babies beginning to pull to standing or who need a bit more containment. Most parents buying for a first-time crawler start with 30cm; those buying ahead start with 40cm.

Mini and small ball pits

Not every room has space for a full playroom setup, and a ball pit does not need one. The most compact standalone pits in the range are the 90cm round designs with 30cm walls, which fit beside a sofa or into a nursery corner, and the 90 x 90cm square pit, which sits flush against a wall. For a mini ball pit inside a wider play area, the MeowBaby Mini sets combine foam play modules with a smaller built-in pool that takes up to 100 balls (the Aesthetic version's pool measures 57 x 45 x 30cm), recommended for ages 1 to 3. Balls for the Mini sets are chosen separately at checkout.

Balls: What Is Included and What to Know

Most ball pits in this collection are supplied without balls, and you choose the colours and quantity at checkout using the ball selector on each listing. All balls used with this collection should be CE-certified 7cm balls: large enough to present no choking risk, small enough to be graspable and engaging for babies in the sensory-play stage. Ball pit play should always be supervised for babies under 12 months. The foam walls are padded and non-rigid, so the pit is forgiving during the sitting-upright stage when babies topple sideways regularly.

Baby Ball Pits: Frequently Asked Questions

What age is a ball pit suitable for?

Our ball pits are suitable for babies from around 6 months, once they can sit with support and engage with objects in their hands. The 30cm wall height is the better starting point for younger babies who are still developing sitting stability. The 40cm height suits babies from around 9 to 10 months who are beginning to pull up or who have stronger sitting posture. All ball pit play should be supervised for babies under 12 months, and the ball pit should not be used as a sleeping or containment area.

How many balls does a ball pit need?

Most parents start with 100 to 200 balls and adjust based on how their child plays. A 90cm diameter ball pit filled to a comfortable depth for sitting typically uses 150 to 200 balls. With too few, the pit loses its sensory appeal; with too many, babies sit on top of the balls rather than in them. Ball colour choice is also a practical consideration: neutral-toned balls stay visible against most floor surfaces if they escape the pit, while primary colours are more visually stimulating for babies at the tracking and reaching stage of development.

Are ball pit balls safe for babies?

Choose balls that carry the CE mark and are at least 6cm across; 7cm balls are the usual size for baby ball pits. Check the balls regularly for cracks or damage, because a cracked plastic ball can have sharp edges and should be replaced. Always supervise children during ball pit play, particularly babies who are still at the stage of putting things in their mouths.

Can ball pit covers be washed?

Most are. The zip-off covers on the round and square pits are machine washable, while the shaped Flower ball pits are cleaned with a damp cloth, so check the care section on each listing for the exact temperature. The zip-off outer cover removes fully and goes into a standard domestic washing machine. Where a pit has a foam core, the foam itself does not need washing and should not be submerged; wipe it down with a damp cloth instead. Allow the outer cover to air dry rather than tumble drying to preserve the fabric texture, particularly for Boucle covers where high heat can affect the looped surface.

What size ball pit do I need for a small room?

For a small room, a 90cm round ball pit with 30cm walls is the most compact standalone option in our range, and it suits babies who are sitting confidently. A 90 x 90cm square pit fits more neatly against a wall or a piece of furniture. If you have more space, the 120cm round boucle pit leaves room for more than one child. Whichever you choose, leave a little clear floor around it so a climbing toddler is not next to a furniture edge.
