Balance bike or scooter: which should I choose?
Both develop confidence and coordination, but they build different skills. A balance bike removes pedals so children focus entirely on steering and balance, pushing with their feet and eventually gliding. Children who learn on a balance bike typically transition to a pedal bike faster than those who use stabilisers. A scooter develops coordination through the push-glide rhythm and introduces steering through weight-shift or handlebar control. Many families use both: a balance bike from around 2.5 years, and a scooter alongside or after as a different kind of outdoor movement.
